The Beacon Fellowship Charitable Trust has announced the results of The Beacon Prize 2010. The nine winners join the ranks of previous Beacon winners such as Sir Bob Geldof, Jamie Oliver and environmentalist Zac Goldsmith - who have all been recognised for their charitable work with this distinguished honour. Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown described the awards as the “Nobel Prize of the charity world”.
Stephen Cohen, Chairman of the Judges’ panel, said:
“We had a really fantastic discussion this morning and the judges feel that they have found a group of people who are outstanding in their charity work. It is a privilege to be able to recognise those individuals whose selflessness and dedication has transformed other people’s lives.”
Community Foundation Network, Beacon’s umbrella body, believes that by highlighting the achievements of the prize winners, others will be inspired and encouraged to make their own contribution towards building resilient, inclusive communities.
From hundreds of nominations, the panel of independent judges selected just nine recipients, from seven categories. At the prize giving ceremony in London, Sir Alec Reed was announced as the overall prize winner and given £30,000 to donate to charity, kindly provided by Russell Investments. "This is a celebration. It's a celebration of great people who are
doing great things in very many parts of our country. It's a celebration
of people who are by their example encouraging other people
to do great things."
