Paul and Diana Lamplugh
Paul and Diana founded the Suzy Lamplugh Trust after the disappearence of their daughter in 1986. Through their work, Paul and Diana established personal safety as a discipline to counter aggression and violence today. In this, Diana became the foremost expert in the country with Paul and Diana working together to create the Trust as the leading authority on the subject.
Original thinkers and tireless campaigners, the Lamplughs established the highest recognition throughout the country and particularly in government and with the authorities, having succeeded in raising awareness of personal safety and inspiring changes in laws and procedures. Their work has included campaigning for legislation on the registration of minicabs, safer rail travel, improved treatment and sentencing of sex offenders, help for vulnerable young people and victims of crime, legislation on stalking and a number of other personal safety drives. The Lamplughs instigated ‘Victims Voice’ and ‘Get Connected’ for vulnerable children on the street (both now independent charities) and have inspired the formation of a number of other initiatives. Diana was awarded an OBE for her work with The Suzy Lamplugh Trust in 1992, and has since been awarded honorary doctorates from four universities. Paul was also awarded an OBE in 2005.
After a massive stroke in 2003, Diana suffered a brain haemorrhage requiring two emergency operations. This resulted in a complete loss of memory and in addition she now suffers from Alzheimer’s forcing both Paul and Diana to step down from their positions at the Trust. Paul continues as a guiding inspiration to the Trust which this year celebrates its 20th anniversary year. With Paul and Diana both now retired from their role of leading the work of the Trust, they have left a robust Organisation that continues to deliver innovative and practical services to support people to live their lives to the full in safety.
Paul and Diana Lamplugh founded The Suzy Lamplugh Trust in 1986 after their daughter, Suzy, disappeared whilst working as an estate agent. Suzy’s body has never been found and in 1993 she was finally declared dead, presumed to have been murdered. The Trust, a registered charity, is the leading UK authority on personal safety. It aims to assist people to lead safer lives through improved understanding of potential dangers and how to tackle them. The Trust undertakes research and works with government, business and educationalists, and campaigns for changes in the law and procedures to improve personal safety in society. It produces a range of practical products and training for the workplace, schools and the general public, including disabled and disadvantaged people. It now has 16 staff and a network of more than 700 personal safety trainers and tutors throughout the UK.
"We both feel that Paul and Diana have been truly inspirational in both their charity work and their personal support and therefore we are proud to nominate them."
