Background
The Beacon Fellowship is the first and only Fellowship scheme to actively support and encourage an improved culture of giving in the UK. Membership of the Fellowship is limited to Beacon Prize winners. Beacon Fellows Lord Bhatia of Hampton and Dame Stephanie Shirley were in 2004 elected Chair and Vice-Chair of the Fellowship. It provides a forum of like-minded people sharing knowledge and experience, learning from challenges and celebrating successes.
Each year the Fellowship meets to welcome new the Fellows and to exchange experiences and best practice. This day is themed ‘Thanks for Giving Day’, and takes place annually on the last Thursday of November, mirroring Thanksgiving Day in the United States. Regional Philanthropy Forums
In addition to the Fellowship meetings, Beacon organises several regional philanthropy events, to which Fellows are invited to speak and attend. The objective of these events is to utilise the knowledge and expertise of Beacon and our partners, as well as the Fellows’ wealth of experience, to encourage more active philanthropy. Focusing on a wide-range of targeted groups, including regional business leaders, philanthropists and financial advisors, the aim is to inspire a wide variety of people to become involved in philanthropy, and to give in more strategic and informed ways.
In 2007 Beacon organised several Philanthropy Forums:

Mentorship Scheme
This project was set up, in cooperation with advisors from CASS Business School, in order to enable Beacon Fellows, Finalists and Highly Commended members to mentor charity leaders and young people who are for example active in fundraising. Over one year, the Beacon Mentors will support a charity leader or young philanthropist in his or her work by providing practical advice and guidance. In addition Beacon is going to work together with other organisations to provide free or discounted management training for Beacon members.
For more information on the Mentorship Scheme please email enquiries@beaconfellowship.org.uk
Ambassador Scheme
This project offers the Fellows and the opportunity to act as ‘Beacon Ambassadors', giving lectures and seminars on their charitable achievements. The series of lectures/seminars will focus on select groups of potential philanthropists including entrepreneurs, the media, the City, and the charity practitioners. It is hoped that the Beacon Ambassadors will inspire and encourage new people to become more philanthropic, and to help those who do already give to do so more effectively.
International Recognition Beacon Fellowship
In the past we have had interest from different parts in the world for the Beacon Awards and Fellowship programme, for example from India and South Africa. It is exciting to see that that the Fellowship continues to get international interest. Recently for example the Dutch bank, ABN AMRO referenced the Beacon Awards and the ‘Beacon Effect’ in a study on new developments in charitable giving titled “Passion, professionalism and perception”.
