Why Does Philanthropy Make Business Sense?
The City has become the UK’s most significant creator of wealth, but the level of giving by individuals and companies still lags behind the US, which gives 1.67% of its GDP to charity compared to 0.7% given by the UK.
Despite giving less than the US, there are many of examples of best practice amongst UK City firms leading the way in corporate philanthropy and helping their employees to give in a structured and effective way. According to a recent report on corporate social responsibility in the Economist, many companies now feel that traditional, arm’s-length philanthropy is no longer fitting. Shareholders want to know their money is being put to good use, and employees want to be actively involved in charitable projects. As a result, corporate philanthropy has become more than a perceived obligation, but a business strategy.
To address this growing trend, on 8th of May the Beacon Fellowship Charitable Trust brought together leaders and experts in philanthropy for the 2008 Annual Philanthropy in the City Forum focussing on the theme, “Why Does Philanthropy Make Business Sense?”
