John Greensmith
John Greensmith is the Interim Chief Executive.
He has had an international career in both the corporate and not-for-profit sectors. Recently, as CEO of Plan International, a child-centred development organisation, he was responsible for overall leadership of Plan’s world-wide operations in 60 countries. He retired from Plan in June 2004 and has continued to be involved in the not-for-profit sector through a number of interim management assignments.
Previously John was Managing Director of BP Africa, a division of BP plc, covering sub-Saharan operations outside South Africa. In this role he was involved in the World Bank’s Structural Adjustment Programme as it related to the energy sector in East Africa. Through this he gained experience of governance processes in sub-Saharan Africa, and an understanding of the environmental and economic priorities in the region.
Prior to the UN General Assembly Special Session on Children, held in May 2002, John joined the leaders of other international NGOs, and UNICEF, in creating the Global Movement for Children aimed at raising awareness of the Millennium Development Goals and other children's issues worldwide. Current interests include the evolution of the NGO sector as it responds to changing global influences, both political and economic.
John holds degrees in Engineering and Business from the University of Cape Town. He has lived and worked in South Africa, Australia and England, and is married, with three adult sons.
