ENTREPRENEUR BEHIND ETHICAL BRAND “ONE WATER” IS AWARDED BEACON PRIZE

Duncan Goose, founder of Global Ethics, the company who launched 'One Water' in 2005, has been awarded a prestigious Beacon Prize. He was chosen as this year's winner in the Creative Giving category for his outstanding achievement in launching 'One Water'.

Duncan is one of just 13 recipients of the 2007 Beacon Prize and joins the ranks of previous Beacon winners such as Sir Bob Geldof, Jamie Oliver and environmentalist, Zac Goldsmith who have all been recognised for their charitable work through what has become known as the 'Nobel Prize of the charity world', first coined by Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

'One' is a brand of bottled water that donates 100% of its profits to providing water solutions in Africa. It was launched at Live8 in 2005 and since then it has helped install 899 roundabout pumps in South Africa, Mozambique, Swaziland and Zambia - enough to supply 1.2 million people with clean drinking water from a sustainable source.

These 'PlayPumps' are innovatively designed as playground roundabouts which pump clean water into storage tanks for the whole community to use. They have changed the lives of many children, who can now attend school rather than having to collect drinking water for their families.

One Water was the official brand of water for both Live8 and Make Poverty History and continues to change the way on which people consider buying water. Duncan's next mission for Global Ethics is to develop other like-for-like initiatives such as selling condoms in the UK to fund HIV prevention work in Africa.

Beacon's Chairman Martyn Lewis said: "We are delighted to award a Beacon Prize to Duncan. His achievement is one of true innovation - water sold on the commercial markets of developed countries directing 100% of its profits to take water directly to 1.2 million people in the developing world. The thought of children now playing on roundabouts and attending school instead of carrying water is one that can inspire all of us to do what we can."

The Prize Ceremony will take place on 22nd November, when the winners will be inaugurated as Beacon Fellows, a community of Beacon Prize winners who together, champion charitable causes across the globe and nurture a wider culture of giving in the UK. The ceremony will also see the overall Beacon Prize winner announced, receiving £30,000 to donate the charitable cause of their choice.
